The food we eat creates the foundation for life. With so much confusion out there surrounding food, I felt obliged to come up with a generalized set of rules that I believe can be applied to anyone.

I’m not here to tell you what you can and cannot eat. These are rules that I believe are simple and practical to implement when trying to transition to a healthier diet.

Eat whole foods, not processed edible food-like substances. If you pick something up at the grocery store, ask yourself this simple question: “Was this made from nature or by humans?” If you answer “humans”, this is not a whole food.

As humans, we are physiologically designed to eat mostly plants. Plants contain fiber, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and polyphenols which are essential for optimal health. Plants are alive, and therefore will eventually rot and go bad.

Healthy fats: [chia, hemp, flax, sesame, and pumpkin seeds], [olive, avocado, flax, and coconut oil], walnuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans, Brazil nuts, ghee, avoca...

DIY Natural & Toxin-free Chemical Peel + Face Mask. Bentonite clay masks have been used for thousands of years dating back to the days of Cleopatra and ancient Roman spas.

While our skin health is an outward reflection of our internal health, there are a number of things you can do to enhance your external complexion.

I start by using Himalaya’s Walnut Scrub, which gently exfoliates the skin using Walnut Shell granules to scrub away dirt, blackheads and dead cells. It also contains Crab Apple, a soothing antiseptic and keratolytic agent that helps loosen dead skin fragments.

Next, combine Aztec Secret Indian Healing clay with @bragglivefoods unpasteurized apple cider vinegar to create a thick paste for your face mask. Apply a thick layer to your face and let dry for ~20 minutes.

You will feel the clay tighten and pull on the skin as it dries. This is a powerful way to pull impurities and toxins from the pores. The acidity of the apple cider vinegar will enhance the body’s inherent...

What other tips would you add? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 40 million Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder. We have all been told that we need to manage stress better. But how?

I am here to tell you that I am one of those people that was diagnosed as a teenager with general anxiety disorder. In addition, I am someone that is more genetically prone to stress and being in a “high strung” state. After going through a gauntlet of pharmaceutical drugs, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

By working with a naturopathic and functional medicine practitioner, I was ultimately able to remove triggers of my anxiety by getting to a root cause level. Much of this involved food sensitivity testing, balancing nutrient deficiencies, removing toxicities, and healing my gut, all of which were instrumental in my healing process.

That being said, these are natural ways that I have found to be effective in managing the stressors of life and driving mysel...

Rate these 5 areas of your life on a scale from 1-10, 10 being exceptional:

• Overall health: do you have a zest for life? One full of vitality and exuberance?

• Body: are you happy with it? Why or why not?

• Spirituality: how do you relate to the world around you? Do you feel like you are a part of the overall universe?

• Career: are you living your purpose?

• Relationships: do the people you associate with build you up or tear you down? Do they support your goals? Do they challenge you to demand more of yourself and inspire you to grow? Do you inspire or challenge those around you?

Which ones were not a 9 or 10? Physically write these down. What would it take from you to get there? What would your life look like if they were a 10? What would it mean to you?

We are now 2 weeks into 2018 and for most of us, we have set several new goals/intentions for ourselves for the new year. The start of the new year has always been a turning of a new leaf, a fresh start for many of us to take on new chal...

Our skin health is an outward reflection of our internal health. Often times, when we desire strong radiant skin, we look for these “silver bullet” skin care products that claim to give us youthful skin. While some products are naturally derived and less toxic than their synthetic counterparts, they still only work superficially.

When we have a lusterless complexion, one that appears dry, inflamed, sagging, and wrinkled, we need to look deeper to restore healthy looking hair, skin, and nails. Skin cells, like all our cells in the body, need nourishment to grow and thrive.

When we adopt a standard American diet (SAD), one that is devoid of whole foods and phytonutrients, and laden with refined sugar & alternative sweeteners, processed and fried foods (synthetic chemicals, neurotoxic food dyes, oxidized vegetable oils), and cholesterol, we create massive amounts of free radical damage in the body.

The oxidative stress induced by these free radicals in turn creates an inflammatory response....

The healing power of nature. While it is always important to take measures to prevent cancer in the first place, adjunctive natural cancer therapy can be a powerful tool. Cancer is the second leading cause of death amongst American’s and is rapidly climbing. When it comes to fighting cancer, spices can have a profound effect on regulating cell proliferation and up regulating the bodies programmed ability to destroy and remove cancerous cells.

One of the most note worthy spices is fresh ground ginger. The active component (6-gingerol) has the ability to not only kill human cancer cells (in a petri dish), but also kill the progenitor or stem cells of the cancer! While chemotherapy can kill the cancer cells, it cannot target the stem cells (6-Gingerol Induces Cell Cycle Arrest and Cell Death of Mutant p53-expressing Pancreatic Cancer Cells). This was a huge discussion at a conference I attended back in 2016 on Spices as Natural Medicine.

Curcumin has been demonstrated to...

Raw honey can be an incredible medicinal substance, especially Manuka honey. It can be used topically to aid in wound healing, is a great anti-microbial agent, a natural cough suppressant, and packed with antioxidants and nutrients to name a few.

However, the growing demand for honey products over the last 20 years has imposed extra precautions when choosing honey for quality assurance.

The monoculture of soy and corn in the agriculture industry, which bees do not pollinate, has lead beekeepers to use corn syrup and fructose in order to constantly feed bees and produce honey for the consumer. This creates a vastly inferior honey than what would be found in nature. I personally only buy honey from the local beekeepers at the farmers market. As with anything, you get what you pay for! For those of you who consume honey, recent testing was done by Food Safety News revealed that 76% of honey sold in stores in the U.S. isn’t real honey b...

In wise words of Dr. Mark Hyman, it all starts with food. I challenge you to start thinking about what TYPE of food you put in your body and not the QUANTITY of food you are consuming.

Your body is an extraordinary vessel that carries you throughout life and uses the food we eat to make energy. But how are processed “food-like substances,” imitation meats, candy, oils, cured meats, and fried foods even remotely nourishing?

Not only are we depriving our body of the raw materials it needs to create energy, but we are creating an environment of chronic inflammation and imbalances that overtime, manifest in chronic disease progression.

Once we, as a society, realize that unhealthy bodies are starving for MICROnutrients as opposed to calories and MACROnutrients, we will see a dramatic shift in public health. Forget carbs, fats, and proteins; calories in and calories out. We are not robots. Real food is living and it nourishes and heals the body. It is abundant in vitamins, minerals, anti...

Don’t have time to exercise in the morning? Try incorporating a 5 minute sun salutation into your morning routine. This sequence of 12 yoga poses originated thousands of years ago in India and is usually practiced facing the rising sun in the morning.

This is a great Vinyasa style flow that helps you ease into your day by waking up the nervous system and getting the blood moving. This powerful sequence of movements allows us to be present, connect with our breath, and calm the body. It can physiologically stimulate the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain and aids in flexibility and strength.

Complete 2-4 sets of this sequence upon waking, making sure to switch from the left side to the right side and vice versa. There are several YouTube videos you can watch on this if you are a visual learner. Try practicing this a couple times a day and awaken your inner light ✨ Namaste

I thought I would share this post from @iamwellandgood after I saw a woman guzzling a large Fruit Punch Gatorade at the gym last night. The woman was probably 50+ pounds overweight and was paying to work with a personal trainer, likely with the intent to lose weight.

I felt for that woman. She was likely drinking that Gatorade with good intention. We’ve been told that when we sweat, we need to replace lost electrolytes. But drinking that bottle of Gatorade likely completed mitigated any potential for her to tap into body. Why? Let me explain.

One of the main reasons we carry excess body weight is the inability to regulate blood sugar correctly (lets ignore the conversation of overconsumption of food for now). When we eat carbohydrates, they are converted into glucose (sugar) to feed our cells. Our body produces insulin to shuttle glucose into our cells. Without insulin, we would not be able to uptake glucose = type 1 diabetes.

But insulin is also a fat storage hormone. So if there i...
